JESSIE VEEDER
Jessie Veeder has been a symbol of folk music in Western North Dakota since she released her first original album when she was only sixteen years old. It was an effort that took her from performing at fairs and festivals around her home state to launching a music and writing career that has spanned decades reached thousands of miles, telling the story of rural living through the captivating lens of a woman who lives it every day.
Jessie’s a powerful storyteller, on paper, on stage and in song. Among her five original albums that span a twenty-plus career as a working and touring musician and trusted commentator and columnist, lies a unique and honest perspective on the working men and women in the small towns, ranches and oil fields of rural America. Her nationally acclaimed song “Boomtown,” a folk ballad about life in Bakken has been featured on area news programs, national and international documentaries and put her on the frontlines of telling the story of community in oil country. Jessie’s book “Coming Home,” released in 2017, is a compilation of her favorite photos, poems, stories and recipes. In 2022, Jessie released her first children’s book, “Prairie Princess,” to help tell the story of rural living and ranch life through the eyes of a young girl. She tours extensively in the upper Midwest as an entertainer, motivational speaker and advocate for agriculture, rural living and the messy side of motherhood. Jessie released her latest album “Yellow Roses,” in 2024, featuring generational stories of rural living and rootsy instrumentation from some of Nashville's best session players. She is currently touring on behalf of this project.
Since 2010 Jessie and her husband, Chad, have worked alongside her father as the fourth generation stewards of the Veeder Ranch where she chronicles life on the land as a weekly columnist for regional newspapers and on her popular blog titled “Meanwhile, back at the ranch…” Throughout the years Jessie’s career as a troubadour songstress and respected writer has held steady and true through ranch work, raising the couple’s two young daughters, Edie (9) and Rosie (7) and surviving a 2020 cancer diagnosis that threatened her life and her voice.
In addition to her career as a writer and performer, Jessie is a founding member of McKenzie County’s Long X Arts Foundation where she works to help create and promote cultural and arts-based activities in her hometown, blending her love and connection to the arts with her drive to make her community a better place to work and live.
Jessie is a regular performer at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko Nevada and large regional festivals. She is the recent recipient of the Governor's Award for the Arts in Individual Achievement, was named North Dakota's Favorite Folk Artist and is the recipient of the North Dakota Ambassador Award.
