BOSCO'S STORY

Abandoned in the Montana woods, a baby moose is rescued & cared for by the Maloney family. The Game Warden warns them it is against the law to take or have in their possession a wild animal. When Bosco is three months old, the Game Warden shows up and wants to exhibit Bosco at state fairs. He comes to take him away only to discover Bosco has been turned loose. Dad told Bosco to hightail it for the mountains. The Game Warden files a complaint, and the case goes to court in Granite County.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jane Van Dyk was born and raised in Butte, Montana, and has a family cabin at Moose Lake. She has strong ties to the Philipsburg community. Her stepfather John Hauck was a Philipsburg native, along with many other Hauck family members.
The real Bosco story was written by Jane's mother, Elizabeth C. Hauck, in her well-researched book "Gold on a Shoestring: Tales of Moose Lake as a Mining Camp" (1984). She found the story of the courthouse trial in a 1928 article in the Philipsburg Mail. Jane was captivated by the Bosco story and tried her hand at turning it into a play. She had a lot of help from her two sons, Fred and Nathan, and is thrilled to have it come to life here in Philipsburg.
